Psst I have a secret. I'm not 130 lbs anymore, nor will I probably be any time soon.
Now that I've said that I can say something else. My children still love me, my husband still loves me, and I'm still a pretty awesome chick.
"As soon as I lose twenty pounds I'm coming in to see you!"
"I'm so fat right now. As soon as I lose some weight I'm booking a family portrait session."
"If we get our family portraits done, can you do your photoshop magic and make me skinnier?"
I hear it all the time from mommas. This same thing over and over. So much so that I've decided to write a short little blog on it.
You are beautiful right now. No make up on. Hair up. I promise you that any portrait or family portrait you take with your children will be a portrait that your children cherish.
Your children will NEVER look at that portrait and think, "Gosh, mom sure was fat. She could have stood to lose some weight." The truth is- your children love you. They see you for you. Beyond the weight. Beyond the messy hair. Beyond the face without makeup.
Your children see your smile when you look at them, your eyes that shine when you're proud of them, the way you giggle when they do something silly, the way you help them with their school work, the way you make their lunch in the morning, the way you snuggle them on the couch, the way you tuck them into bed and kiss them goodnight, the way you read those nightly stories to them in voices that would make any voice impersonator proud, the way you dance with them, the way you let them splash in the puddles outside after it rains, the way you allow them the independence to be an individual, the way you go to their sports games and cheer them on, the way you love them fiercely without expectation. Without any expectations.
Why is it then, that we as women, can't love ourselves?
If you want to lose weight then I say absolutely. Do it. If you want to eat healthier and work out so you can achieve that bangin' body you've been wanting, do it! But, please...don't think you aren't good enough to exist in portraits and memories today. Your children will remember you not because of how much you did or didn't weigh, but because you were important to them. You were important during every moment.
