A text, "we are good to go at 7! Woot Woot" started my Friday morning on July 29th, 2016. It was going to be a fantastic day as a little girl was about to begin her entrance into the world. Momma was a previous birth client of mine only 15 months ago with Baby Charlee and the day Charlee's mom found out she was pregnant with baby Andie she messaged me to save the date on my calendar for the birth.
I arrived at the hospital at 0730 where Alysha was being hooked up to pitocin and admittance papers were being finished.
The name of the baby hadn't yet been decided on and they even had a "cast your vote" on the white board. Alysha chose Charlee's name so Jerod got the honor of choosing this little one's name with Alysha being given two veto votes. The choices Jerod decided on were: Averie, Ryann, Andie, Jordyn, and Taylor. Alysha used her two veto votes with Jordyn and Taylor leaving just three names for Jerod to choose from. None of us knew which it'd be until baby Andie arrived and Jerod laid eyes on her.
The Willamette Valley Birthing Center is located in McMinnville, Oregon and is newer to the area. The staff is incredibly friendly and the rooms are newer being the birthing center itself is new. Each room is spacious and includes a birthing tub complete with jets, an amazing thing that my client utilized as I'm sure many other mommas have. It was about an hour after Alysha started receiving the pitocin that her body started feeling it and her contractions became more present. From a very low level of pregnancy discomfort to a 2 or 3.
After the pitocin was in and before the contractions became too much, Alysha & Jerod had a few visitors. Visitors included Alysha's step mom, Jerod's parents, and Alysha's mother. During this time Jerod decided to catch a nap. Smart man as any new parent will tell you that sleep seems to be elusive after having a baby.
Pretty soon the contractions were becoming more intense. From a two or three pain level they increased to a five or six. At this point Alysha found comfort in Jerod rubbing her back, a birthing playlist I put on from my Ipad, and focusing on her breathing.
When the rubbing no longer seemed to help the helpful nurses set up a pull bar on the bed she could utilize and change up how she was dealing with the contractions.
Alysha didn't find much comfort in the pull bar and wanted to switch it up.
With little relief and her contractions coming on much stronger Alysha decided to get into the tub. She spent a good forty five minutes there and experienced transition from there.
When the tub was no longer helping Jerod helped Alysha out, drying her off, and then helped her back into bed. From here, Alysha decided to try to bars once again. Soon that wasn't enough to control her pain so to switch things up for her again they brought in a seat for her to sit on and rock back and forth while Jerod rubbed her back.
It was getting close for this momma and when she couldn't take much more they had her get on the bed on hands and knees until the doctor could come in and check her.
The doctor arrived and checked Alysha to see how far she had progressed. We were hoping it was baby time as this poor momma was tired and in pain.
After checking her, her doctor announced that she was almost a ten and as soon as the table used in delivery was retrieved, the warmer for the baby started, then she'd be able to start pushing. Alysha was more than ready to have that happen.
Twenty minutes of pushing and we could see baby. She was almost here!
What a beautiful baby. I'm so happy for these two and their other daughter, Charlee. Such a happy day! Skin to skin time and then weight, height, head circumference. This all before daddy gets to hold her. We did however, get her name as Jerod announced proudly that it would be Andie Jae.
