The Four C Rule

When scheduling family portraits, the most common question I field is, “What do you suggest we wear?” Well my dears, that depends…

While there are a few factors that can dictate which direction you should take, such as location, indoor vs. outdoor and the seasons, these are the four key rules that I always begin with.

Color, Continuity, Classic and Comfort.

Let’s talk color, first-

Color choices for family portrait sessions should be basic and subdued. While there is no denying that clothing choice is important, it’s never a good idea to let your skirt take center stage. A well thought out clothing palette ensures that the focus will be on your beautiful family, and not your sweetie’s bright chevron teal tie.

For fall and winter sessions, colors such as Mulberry, Greens, Browns, Deep Reds, Golds and Khaki colors can really warm up the image and flatter your skin tone, whether you fair or dark. When planning summer and spring, beach or indoor sessions, Blues, summery Yellows, Khakis and white are a fair bet. Be careful with your white, however. Too many white shirts with long sleeves can seem heavy and overbearing. Breaking up the lack of color with rolled up or short sleeves is generally your best choice when wearing white. If you are fair skinned and blonde, white may wash out your complexion. If you are set on white- add a solid pop of a coordinating color near your face to warm things up a bit.

Continuity- Choosing clothing that coordinates between no more than 4 colors will be your best bet. Keeping tones within the same color family will help lend cohesiveness to your portrait that shows how connected you really are. Keep in mind that the plan here is to coordinate your clothing, but not match exactly. Compliment but don’t go overboard.
Keep your prints to one person for every three people. Too many prints will make your eye wander when viewing the photograph.

Classic- Whether you are planning on portraits for the holidays, or to commemorate a special occasion, the goal of every portrait photographer is to capture your family in a classic and timeless way that you will hang on your wall for a lifetime. By keeping your clothing choices simple and classic, you are ensuring that your portrait will stand the test of time. Comfort- Let’s face it. Family portraits can be fun, exciting, and exhausting. Choose clothing for your family that are comfortable and easy to move in, with fabrics that can breathe yet remain relatively wrinkle-free. A comfy family is a happy family, which leads to capturing the best gift I can give you, portraits that portray just the amazing family you are.
